About 15 years ago I was in a very bad place. I was a Chartered Accountant with my own practice – so to outsiders moderately successful. However, on the inside I was tortured and dying. I was using recreational drugs, I was abusing alcohol, I was struggling with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, gender and sexuality and stress.
Studying counselling and psychotherapy was the best thing I have done in life and then further studies in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I have tried most of the therapies around and many of the other programs such as AA and NA. None worked or resonated the way Acceptance and Commitment has. ACT literally saved my life.
ACT feels the right therapy for these times. It does not pretend to offer an easy fix it, instead it utilises a mix of metaphor, paradox, mindfulness skills, experiential exercises and values guided behavioural based interventions to create a journey to work with (rather than against) things that trouble us.
ACT teaches us to accept the mind and its constant and often contradictory messages. The skills-based part of ACT teaches us techniques to defuse the power that our mind has over our behaviour and actions. Finally, with values-based action and goals we choose behaviour and actions that take us towards the person we want to be in life.
Now I am a counsellor and psychotherapist I love working with clients around Australia using SKYPE and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help with issues such as anxiety, stress, work/life balance, relationships, gender and sexuality, addictions and alike.
ACT is more than a therapy, it is a toolkit of strategies and tools to help us become the best person we can me and work with our mind rather than against it. Also, and i think, most importantly ACT can be fun. Some therapies feel just too much hard work, like its always an uphill battle. ACT is modern, can be fun and is creative.
